Cinderhold was built on top of an older town, and the older town was built on its cellars. The Archivist keeps the overflow of her ledger down there, in dry rooms the rats think are theirs. Every year she loses a king or two to their teeth, and every year she writes them again from memory.

Cinderhold foi construída sobre uma cidade mais antiga, e a cidade mais antiga foi construída sobre seus porões. A Arquivista guarda lá embaixo o que não cabe em seu registro, em salas secas que os ratos acham que são deles. Todo ano ela perde um rei ou dois para os dentes deles, e todo ano os escreve de novo de memória.
